| March 31, 2005 - Chittick Elementary School Student Wins National Contest Apryl Nixon, a fourth-grader at East Brunswick’s Chittick Elementary School, defeated 2,000 other applicants in an essay contest run by the Hans Christian Andersen Foundation. She will get to take a weekend trip to Copenhagen, Denmark where she will meet celebrities and heads of state. Apryl’s teacher at Chittick School, Lauren Gilman, had Apryl’s class discuss lessons they learned as they read Andersen’s books, and in February asked the class to write about them. | March 4, 2005 - Township asks developer to scale back Meyers shopping center plans The East Brunswick Planning Board asked Thomas Pagano, president of Pagano Real Estates Inc., to scale back his plans for Summerhill Square which will be built on the site of the old Meyers shopping center. | December 14, 2004 - School Bond Referendum Passes East Brunswick voted 3,752 to 1,886 in favor of the $106.1 million project that will rebuild Hammarskjold Middle School and add space onto Central and Lawrence Brook elementary schools. | November 11, 2004 - Suburban Awarded East Brunswick Bus Contract The Township Council passed a resolution Monday night to award a three-year contract to Suburban Bus Company. Suburban will offer passengers a 10-trip package that will cost $60; as opposed to Academy’s proposed $66.50. Those figures are for the first year of the contract only, and the second year will cost $62 for the 10 tickets, while year three will cost $64. | November 11, 2004 - December 14 School Construction Referendum Large increases in school enrollment since 1994 have caused class sizes to grow beyond the state guidelines. School officials plan to fix the worst first by building a mostly new Hammarskjold Middle School and by improving and adding onto the Central and Lawrence Brook elementary schools. The project would cost $106.1 million, $81.4 from township taxpayers and $24.7 million from the state. For East Brunswick homeowners, the cost per $100,000 of assessed value would be $45 in 2006 and in subsequent years $74, $131, and $140 in 2009. The plan is to follow up in two years with a second, less-costly plan to add onto and renovate the Bowne-Munro, Chittick, Frost, Irwin, Memorial and Warnsdorfer elementary schools. | January 1, 2004 Anthony W. Alexander gets his WWII medals Anthony Alexander, East Brunswick resident and parishioner of Saint Mary of Ostrabrama Church in South River, was finally presented his WWII medals, including a Bronze Star, by Congressman Rush Holt. During the Battle of the Bulge, he single handedly captured 7 Nazi prisoners. He was later captured himself and during 3 months of captivity he lost 50 pounds and would have soon starved to death had he not been rescued by the 6th Armored Division on March 30th 1945.
