East Brunswick, No. 11 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, was awarded the top seed for the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament, which gets under way Monday with six games in the Play-In Round at the higher seed.

Monroe, which needs a win on Saturday over North Brunswick to clinch the White Division title, was a surprise No. 2 pick over Edison, which is ranked No. 8 in the state. An Edison win over Old Bridge yesterday would have clinched a tie with East Brunswick for the Red Division title. East Brunswick and Edison split this season.

The Bears, ranked No. 2 in the Home News Tribune, had to go back to playing in a tight game on Saturday as their senior ace, Beth Ann Hyland, and J.P. Stevens junior Rebecca Coleman kept trading zeros in the circle.

East Brunswick finally broke through in the top of the fifth when cleanup hitter Caitlen Hertel ripped a two-out, two-run single down the third base line to put the Bears ahead 2-0 and they would go on to defeat No. 9 Stevens 4-0 in the Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division battle for their sixth straight win.

Carsin Conner went 3-for-4 with the go-ahead RBI and also earned the victory in relief as the 12th-seeded Howell softball team defeated top-seeded East Brunswick, 4-2, in an NJSIAA Central Group IV semifinal Tuesday.

It was upset city at South Plainfield High School yesterday as Briana Pichalski and 10th-seeded Woodbridge shut out third-seeded Bishop Ahr 4-0 before freshman Kelly Widener and 12th-seeded Monroe stunned top-seeded East Brunswick 5-0 in the semifinals of the Greater Middlesex Tournament.

Lauren Pensaville and Alex Krantz had two hits each hit for East Brunswick, which won its 17th straight game. Caitlen Hertel drove in two runs with a single, while Krantz also drove in a run.

EAST BRUNSWICK 4, SAYREVILLE 3: Dallas Ostin doubled and drove in three runs as the top-seeded Bears survived a scare from the 17th-seeded Bombers.

Beth Ann Hyland allowed one earned run on six hits and one walk while striking out seven for East Brunswick (19-1), which will meet ninth-seeded J.P. Stevens on Wednesday in the quarterfinals. Shannon Costello went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Jackie O’Connor doubled and drove in the other East Brunswick run.

After Colonia’s Melissa Rustemeyer homered with one out in the second, East Brunswick rallied with 11 unanswered runs to record the five-inning, regular-season victory in East Brunswick. Rustemeyer’s homer was the lone hit given up by Beth Ann Hyland, who struck out seven and walked none. Gabrielle Kelliher, Deb DeWitt and Lauren Pensaville had two hits each for East Brunswick (18-1), which won its 15th straight game. DeWitt drove in three runs. Colonia fell to 10-12.
