East Brunswick Soccer

The No. 4 seed in a county tournament and a 9-6-1 record and is nothing to sneeze at — a lot of teams around would take that resume and run with it. But there’s no denying that the expectations are a little bit higher than that for East Brunswick, the most dominant program in the history of the Greater Middlesex Conference.

A 2-0 victory against Prep power Pennington on Monday may be the start of achieving those expectations.

East Brunswick coach Kevin Brady didn’t sound panicked before the match, but  he didn’t deny that there had been some disappointing moments so far this year — four one-goal losses on the campaign came to mind. Throughout the season, Brady says his team has maintained composure, and learned from the struggles.

"It’s tremendous," Brady said of the win over Pennington. "The kids, they’ve been tremendous all year as they’ve had to deal with tough moments. They’re not used to being on the bad luck side of a couple of these results. But they’ve kept positive and they’ve given themselves a chance to be successful. And that’s the key at the end in a game like this."

Pennington was playing without star defender Alana Cook, and the East Brunswick offense took advantage of her absence. Senior forward Sydney Rosa was the offensive spark plug as she has been for most of the season, generating chances throughout the game and scoring the only two goals of the game.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ – In an extremely tense and well played game, the Raiders of Hillsborough High School withstood a furious seventh inning rally by the Lady Bears of East Brunswick High School and ended East Brunswick’s dream of making the State Tournament. The top seeded Raiders defeated the second seeded Lady Bears on the Raiders home field, 6-4 in the championship game of the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 4 Tournament. This game clearly showed why these two teams were the top seeds in the region, as neither team ever gave up, and the game literally came down to the last batter for East Brunswick. The Lady Bears started the game strongly against Raiders pitcher Katie Gademsky. Sam Smalley reached to lead the game off, and then Gabrielle Kelliher crushed a pitch to dead center field, sailing over the fence, and giving the Lady Bears a very quick 2-0 lead.  Lady Bears pitcher Lauren Assennata singled, but then Gademsky settled down and avoided any further damage.

Shelby Lipson had a thought in mind upon stepping to the plate for East Brunswick in a crucial fourth-inning situation during yesterdays game against Middletown South in the final of the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 tournament. The junior first baseman wanted to succeed not only for herself, but for the teammates who had just executed so well to place a runner in prime scoring position.Lipson was batting with Gabrielle Kelliher on third base and two out in a fast-paced, scoreless game. Kelliher began the inning with a single and then moved straight to third on a gutsy hustle play off a Caitlin Hertels well-placed sacrifice bunt along the third base line.

The Bears, ranked No. 2 in the Home News Tribune, had to go back to playing in a tight game on Saturday as their senior ace, Beth Ann Hyland, and J.P. Stevens junior Rebecca Coleman kept trading zeros in the circle.

East Brunswick finally broke through in the top of the fifth when cleanup hitter Caitlen Hertel ripped a two-out, two-run single down the third base line to put the Bears ahead 2-0 and they would go on to defeat No. 9 Stevens 4-0 in the Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division battle for their sixth straight win.
