SOUTH BRUNSWICK – Take a pair of neighboring division rivals that don’t like each other to begin with and then put heavy implications on the line on top of that and you get what the Monroe and East Brunswick boys soccer teams put out on the line against each other on Thursday night at South Brunswick High School. With a trip to the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament finals on the line in the third meeting between the teams this season, the second-seeded Falcons outlasted third-seeded East Brunswick 1-0 on the heels of Zach Hroch’s 10th minute goal on a header as they’ll play for their second county title in three years on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Colonia High School against the South Brunswick-St. Joseph winner.“The tough part about, a semifinal or final, is we’ve played these guys twice already and now it’s a third time, so it becomes the rivalry and everything else and that’s what we tried to avoid or try to relay to these guys,” Monroe 16th-year coach Steve MacKenzie said. “It’s tough to do, but you get the hard fought game. It was a good battle.”Monroe 17-3-1 had a bevy of scoring opportunities in the first half, as they outshot the Bears 12-5, but could manage only the one goal from Hroch. The second half was extra chippy and physical from both sides, but the scoring chances came much less frequently.“We talk about scoring early in all of our games and we’re confident that we can score,” MacKenzie said. “We were a little unlucky in the first half. In the second half we had a couple of chances to go at them and probably gave the ball up a little too early, but we’re always confident in our attack. We always feel like we can score.”Hroch’s goal came off a rebound on teammate Jeremy Mammen’s shot attempt that was punched out by East Brunswick 13-6-1 goalkeeper Brandon Lillian right near Hroch.“As soon as we’re up, we just want to keep the intensity like that, to keep it high and don’t drop it at all because you can’t give them any chances,” said Hroch, a junior midfielder. “They were getting a lot of throws and we just needed to get the ball cleared and out.”Monroe’s defense, highlighted by the strong play of senior outside backs Justin Thompson and Pat Monaco and senior goalkeeper Bryce Horn, was able to keep a strong East Brunswick attack with a multitude of forwards capable of scoring at bay.“This game just gave us another opportunity to step it up and get our chance to go to a bigger place,” Hroch said. “This is not the end.”Staff writer Mike Becker:

Monroe (10-3-1) took an early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when Dave Durski finished a flick inside the box from Jeremy Mammen before Keysean Brant-Sharp’s penalty kick tied it 1-1 for East Brunswick in the 25th minute.

The two teams traded penalty kicks in the second half – Infosino converted a kick in the 49th minute for the Falcons while Brant-Sharp answered for the Bears in the 56th minute to tie it.

Monroe senior goalie Bryce Horn made eight saves while East Brunswick keeper Dennis Kotenko stopped seven shots.

East Brunswick played without senior forward Alex Mora, one of their key players.

“Alex sprained his ankle, obviously a big loss for us, but we have a lot of good players,” McKibbin said. “Some guys really stepped up for us and I was happy with the guys who filled in for him.”

For two teams that have combined for three GMC Tournament titles over the past three years, this game certainly showed both squads what type of fight they could be in for in the postseason.

“Our team was kind of feeling down (coming in), but this win definitely picked us up for the postseason and this is a final game right here,” Infosino said. “We know that we can play in these big games, so we can compete.”

EAST BRUNSWICK – Senior midfielder Noah Levine picked a fine time to score his first goal of the season.Levine scored the lone goal in the 12th minute of play as the East Brunswick High School boys soccer team defeated St. Joseph 1-0 at home on Monday. It was a beautiful combination of passes between senior Kevin Walsh and Levine that found Levin past the back line and alone with the goalie. He was able to finish his chance against a tough rival.“It was a quick break, we won the ball in the midfield and we just attacked really quickly,” said Levine. “I played a good on to Kevin and then he played me in. The goalie came off his line and I slid it far post.”It came against a tough opponent and heated rival in St. Joseph, who possessed the ball for long stretches. However, the Bears were stout defensively and were able to shut down any chances the Falcons had.Levine was happy to have the goal come against St. Joseph and mentioned that it is always a game that the Bears look forward to.“It has always been a tough game,” said Levine. “It’s a huge rivalry throughout the whole school. Every sport, it’s like we’re gunning for St. Joseph, they’re gunning for us. This year the game was a little bit more laid back, but the intensity was there within the little battles player to player. I think we stayed strong today.”The rivalry was on everyone’s minds, but to East Brunswick coach Terry McKibbin, it is a healthy one.
