East Brunswick loses in semi-finals

East Brunswick lost a hard fought game against Colonia in the GMC semifinals. The Bears made a sprint toward the end but were not able to close the gap. The Bear Den came out in force and cheered on the team. The following NJ.com article covers the game and includes lots of very nice pictures. Please click the link below to see the full article.

After an even first quarter where Ross and Colonia star guard Chase Barneys went back and forth scoring and guarding each other, Colonia began to execute a balanced attack on the offensive end in the second quarter. Barneys was at the head of the attack, orchestrating the offense from the point guard position and looking for his own shot when necessary, as he finished the game as Colonia’s leading scorer with 13 points, nine of which came in the first half.

To start the second half Colonia’s lead ballooned from six points to 12 points as the half started with that Big Three of Barney, JJ Corbett and Jodrell Thompson each scoring. On the defensive end Colonia held East Brunswick without a field goal in the third quarter until 1:50 remained in the period. The effective defensive pressure and positioning combined with Thompson’s seven point third quarter gave Colonia a 38-22 lead going into the final period.

But in the fourth quarter East Brunswick came roaring back thanks to the vocal support of their student section. Led by Ross’s six fourth quarter points and a defense that forced Colonia turnover after turnover, the Bears pulled to within six with under a minute left, but the Bears couldn’t convert on some fatal misses in that final minute.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – Senior leadership is a key to success for any team.  For the Bears of East Brunswick High School, the memories of their recent second-half thumping by St. Joe’s by 30 points still fresh in their minds, a comfortable first quarter lead slipped away after the first quarter against Perth Amboy, leaving a large feeling of unease as the teams headed to the locker rooms at halftime. But the Bears’ star guard, Princeton-bound senior Amir Bell, took control of the game in the third quarter, and scored 11 of his game high 17 points in the second half, as East Brunswick ran away to a convincing 64-42 Senior Night victory Tuesday night at the East Brunswick High School gym.
