June 8, 2007 - State Finals: East Brunswick defeated St. Peters Prep 25-21, 25-22
East Brunswick won the state title in two games over a spirited St. Peter's Prep team. The Bears rolled
out quickly to a 7-3 lead with awe inpiring kills, but St. Peter's fought back to 10-7. East Brunswick
then got back into their high powered game and extended the lead. The second game was close most of the
way with St. Peters Prep closing to within a point of East Brunswick on several occasions. The
Bears never gave up the lead and were up by 4 or 5 points much of the time. While East Brunswick did
not play quite as sharply as they had in their previous victory over Southern, they still provided
plenty of evidence as to why they are clearly the best team in the state. Alex Rigley made four impressive kills.
Travis Heilman was amazing with 13 kills and 6 digs. A key factor in the victory for the Bears
was their ability to dig out the ball following St. Peter's blocks. Dan Korten had 7 digs and
Eric Corpus had 10 digs to go with his 3 kills.
Christian Portera had 6 kills and 3 blocks. Kyle Barry as usual was fabulous, with 29 assists and 2 kills -
at one critical point
he flipped the ball over the net instead of setting anyone which caught St. Peters by surprise.
John McLaughlin had 3 kills. With eight seniors
on the team, they had extra incentive to win in two games since they were anxious to get to their
senior Prom which started at the same time the game did. With this victory,
East Brunswick won the state championship for the sixth time in the last 9 years. East Brunswick is now 30-2 for the season.

East Brunswick played some incredible volleyball. In the first game, East Brunswick fell behind
7-4, but then went on a roll and pulled out ahead 13-8. The Bears stayed comfortably ahead for the rest
of the first game. The second game was close the whole way. East Brunswick opened up 3 point leads a few
times, but Southern kept responding and closing the gap. With the score tied 10-10, Southern pulled out
to a 13-10 advantage. East Brunswick regained the lead 17-16, only to have Southern pull back in front
at 22-19. The Bears came right back to a 23-22 advantage only to face a match point when Southern went
ahead 24-23. Eric Corpus got a kill to tie up the game again. Southern then got called for a net violation
to allow the Bears their first match point. The game surged back and forth all the way up to 30-29 at
which point Eric Corpus blocked the ball to the floor for the victory and the Bears fans poured onto the
court. East Brunswick will face St. Peters Prep for the NJSIAA Finals on Friday at 7PM at South Brunswick
