March 1, 2006 - NJSIAA Group 4 Second Round - Freehold Twp. 56, East Brunswick 54


East Brunswick got off to a strong start and was ahead 15-7 at the end of the first quarter against third seeded Freehold Twp. The Bears still held onto a 24-19 lead at the half, but trailed Freehold Twp. by the end of the third quarter. Freehold Twp surged to an 11 point lead half way through the final period. East Brunswick tried to come back, but despite a buzzer beater three pointer by Tom Gadziala, they could not quite close the gap. Scoring for East Brunswick were: Jimmy McCloskey (5 pts), Tom Gadziala (18 pts), John Byrne (13 pts), Steve Netti (2 pts), Mike Wagenblast (4 pts), John McLaughlin (5 pts), Eric Eckhardt (5 pts) and Travis Heilman (2 pts). East Brunswick is now 18-10 for the season.

February 27, 2006 - NJSIAA Group 4 First Round - East Brunswick 63, Rancocas Valley 48


East Brunswick won a solid victory in the first round of the NJSIAA Group IV Tournament over Rancocas Valley. East Brunswick grabbed a 12-7 lead at the first quarter and built it up to 30-14 at the half. In the second half, Tom Gadziala scored 19 of his 23 points to make sure the Bears stayed out in front. East Brunswick will play at Freehold Township (3rd Seed) on Wednesday at 7 P.M. Scoring for East Brunswick were: Jimmy McCloskey (6 pts), Tom Gadziala (23 pts), John Byrne (10 pts), Steve Netti (3 pts), Mike Wagenblast (6 pts), John McLaughlin (4 pts), Eric Eckhardt (6 pts) and Travis Heilman (5 pts). February 24, 2006 - Cardinal McCarrick 63, East Brunswick 49


East Brunswick fell behind 16-12 in the first quarter and were down by 40-28 at the half. Despite Eric Eckhardt scoring 11 points, East Brunswick could not catch up to Cardinal McCarrick. Scoring for East Brunswick were: Tom Gadziala (6 pts), John Byrne (12 pts), John McLaughlin (4 pts), Mike Wagenblast (9 pts), Eric Eckhardt (11 pts), Stephen Grossman (1 pts), Matt Gases (4 pts) and Travis Heilman (2 pts). February 18, 2006 - GMC Tournament Quarter Finals - Metuchen 62, East Brunswick 56


East Brunswick was up against the top seeded team, but they played very tough. The Bears were ahead 10-8 at the end of the first period and were only down 22-18 at the half. In the third period East Brunswick fell behind 40-31, but then Jimmy McCloskey hit a 3 pointer and made a layup to pull the Bears back to within 4 points. With 1:03 left in the game, Mike Wagenblast made a layup which brought the score to 56-53. Metuchen responded with a three point play of their own, followed by a 3 point basket by Tom Gadziala to bring the score to 59-56 with 29 seconds left, but the Bears could not score again and Metuchen made their free throws to end the game. Scoring for East Brunswick were: Jimmy McCloskey (11 pts), Tom Gadziala (12 pts), John Byrne (15 pts), Steve Netti (4 pts) and Mike Wagenblast (14 pts). East Brunswick is now 17-8 for the season.

February 16, 2006 - GMC Tournament 2nd Round - East Brunswick 46, Dunellen 39


The game was very tight through the first half with East Brunswick leading by 2 at the end of the half. The Bears surged forward in the 3rd period with a 13-6 run. Tom Gadziala lead the Bears in scoring with 20 points. Steve Netti had 10 points and nine rebounds. Scoring for East Brunswick were: Tom Gadziala (20 pts), John Byrne (5 pts), Steve Netti (10 pts), John McLaughlin (2 pts), Mike Wagenblast (4 pts) and Eric Eckhardt (5 pts). East Brunswick scored and amazing 9 three point shots. The Bears got off to an roaring start with a 19-2 first period. John Byrne lead East Brunswick with 12 points, followed by Jim McCloskey and Mike Wagenblast at 11. East Brunswick played a solid game against a very strong St. Joseph team, but could not pull off a victory. The Bears kept it close in the first period, but were outscored 21-8 in the second period. Tom Gadziala had an impressive evening, scoring 18 for East Brunswick. Scoring for East Brunswick were: Jimmy McCloskey (7 pts), Tom Gadziala (18 pts), John Byrne (7 pts), Steve Netti (4 pts), John McLaughlin (2 pts), Mike Wagenblast (4 pts), Andrew Golczewski (2 pts) and Eckhardt (2 pts). February 3, 2006 - East Brunswick 49, Perth Amboy 38


Both teams got off to a very slow start with the first five minutes of the game resulting in a 3-3 tie. East Brunswick pulled ahead 7-3, but at the end of the first quarter the Bears were behind Perth Amboy 9-8. East Brunswick spread the scoring around with John McLaughlin and Andrew Golczewski scoring baskets to help pull the Bears ahead. East Brunswick was doing a great job of getting the rebounds on both ends of the court with Steve Netti and Mike Wagenblast snatching everything. Tom Gadziala disrupted many passes as well as grabbing an impressive number of rebounds. The Bears were ahead 22-16 at the half. In the third period, East Brunswick struggled. Piscataway crept slowly back into the game and by the start of the 4th period, they tied the game at 30. John Byrne of East Brunswick, then decided to show everyone how the game was to be played. He sank a couple of three pointers, some foul shots and a few jump shots to lauch the Bears to a 47-34 lead. Scoring for East Brunswick were: Tom Gadziala (4 pts), John Byrne (22 pts), Steve Netti (2 pts), John McLaughlin (8 pts), Andrew Golczewski (2 pts), Mike Wagenblast (7 pts) and Eckhardt (4 pts). Despite Rodney Freeney of Piscataway going over 1,000 career points with a 23 point effort, East Brunswick got a solid victory over rival Piscataway. John Byrne had a stong showing with 22 points, followed by Tom Gadziala with 11 points and Steve Netti with 10 points for East Brunswick. The Bears trailed 16-14 at the end of the first quarter and were only up 30-28 at the half, but John Byrne lead a surge in the 3rd period and the Bears didn't look back. Scoring for East Brunswick were: Jimmy McCloskey (3 pts), Tom Gadziala (11 pts), John Byrne (22 pts), Steve Netti (10 pts), John McLaughlin (2 pts), Mike Wagenblast (9 pts) and Eckhardt (4 pts). January 30, 2006 - East Brunswick 48, Sayreville 39


East Brunswick got off to a 27-19 lead at the half, but struggled through the third period. It looked like Sayreville was going to catch up, but Tom Gadziala made a couple of strong plays inside to help pull back ahead. Mike Wagenblast made a nice basket in a crowd. Strong defensive rebounding by Tom Gadziala and Steve Netti, helped East Brunswick contain Sayreville. John Byrne was great, as always, scoring 19 points on the night. East Brunswick lost to a strong South Brunswick team at South Brunswick. Mike Wagenblast led East Brunswick scorers with 16 points, going 6-8 on the evening. Tom Gadziala scored 15 points. East Brunswick was never able to take the lead, with each rally attempt cut short. Scoring for East Brunswick were: Jimmy McCloskey (2 pts), Tom Gadziala (15 pts), John Byrne (7 pts), John McLaughlin (2 pts), Mike Wagenblast (16 pts), Chris Ragland (2 pts), Jason Henning (3 pts) and Eric Eckhardt (4 pts). January 24, 2006 - Edison 59, East Brunswick 58


East Brunswick suffers a disappointing setback against Edison. East Brunswick was tied with Edison at the half, but with Sean Ogunnoiki of Edison scoring 14 of his 22 points in the second half, and Zach Manfre hitting 8 of 12 free throws, the Bears could not stop Edison. East Brunswick did stay in the game and with a few seconds left had a chance to tie the game, but John Byrne's three pointed missed and even though he caught the rebound and put it in for two, there was only one second left in the game. Scoring for East Brunswick were: Jimmy McCloskey (5 pts), Tom Gadziala (19 pts), John Byrne (16 pts), John McLaughlin (2 pts), Andrew Golczewski (3 pts), Mike Wagenblast (10 pts) and Eckhardt (3 pts). East Brunswick is now 10-5 for the season.

January 20, 2006 - Colonia 48, East Brunswick 43


East Brunswick played a great game and came up just short against one of the best teams in the state. East Brunswick got off to a slow start and fell behind 8-2, but the Bears have heart and they fought back as they would all game. Steve Netti scored a basket to start the run and a few minutes later Mike Wagenblast hit a free throw to make the score 8-7. The Bears were playing great defense, but with Colonia's Jeff Totin hitting 5-7 three pointers, it was a struggle to keep the game close. East Brunswick was down 25-19 at the half, and 29-21 shortly after. Tom Gadziala demonstrated some power basketball and scored two quick baskets with impressive drives to the hoop to pull the Bears to 29-24. Another 3 pointer by Jeff Totin game Colonia a 32-24 margin, but East Brunswick would not quit. They showed tremendous hustle and with 1:36 left in the game they cut the margin to two at 42-40. After Jeff Totin scored a basket for Colonia, Tom Gadziala hit a 3 pointer with 27 seconds left to make the score 44-43. The Bears were called for a foul trying to steal the ball and Colonia hit both of the shots on the 1-1. Down by three, East Brunswick still had a chance to tie the game, but Colonia intercepted a pass and made both of their 1-1 shots following an intentional foul to make the final score 48-43. Scoring for East Brunswick were: Tom Gadziala (13 pts), Jimmy McCloskey (3 pts), John Byrne (8 pts), Steve Netti (4 pts), Mike Wagenblast (10 pts), Eric Eckhardt (2 pts) and John McLaughlin (3 pts). East Brunswick had another close shave with Old Bridge and once again ended up the winner. Eric Eckhardt made a layup with 11.9 seconds left to lift the Bears to victory. Tom Gadziala was unstoppable, scoring a staggering 28 points for East Brunswick. Scoring for East Brunswick were: Tom Gadziala (28 pts), John Byrne (4 pts), Steve Netti (2 pts), Mike Wagenblast (12 pts), Andrew Golczewski (2 pts) and Eckhardt (4 pts). East Brunswick is now 10-3 for the season.

January 14, 2006 - East Brunswick 47, Hillsborough 45


East Brunswick raced out to an early lead, but were nearly caught from behind at the end. With 30 seconds left the Bears had a 2 point lead and Steve Netti got an offensive rebound which he passed to Tom Gadziala for a layup giving the Bears a 4 point lead. This was enough to prevent overtime when Hillsborough scored in the last second. Scoring for East Brunswick were: Jimmy McCloskey (3 pts), Tom Gadziala (19 pts), John Byrne (5 pts), Steve Netti (10 pts), Mike Wagenblast (7 pts), McLaughlin (2 pts), Andrew Golczewski (3 pts) and Eric Eckhardt (3 pts). East Brunswick put on a powerful display against Piscataway in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. East Brunswick lead by 20-7 after one quarter and 30-9 at the half. John Byrne scored 19 points including 5 three-pointers. Mike Wagenblast scored 12 and Andrew Golczewski scored 10 for the Bears. Jimmy McCloskey scored 5 points and had 6 assists for East Brunswick. East Brunswick got the new year off on the right foot. The game started off slowly with both sides staying close, but the Bears pulled out to a 32-25 lead at the half. Tom Gadziala busted the game wide open with two three pointers to put the Bears up by 44-35. Steve Netti came back into the game after taking a breather and immediately powered to the hoop for several layups, resulting in a 50-37 margin. On defense, East Brunswick was getting nearly all of the rebounds and were not giving the Vikings any easy shots. Even with the game clearly in hand, John Byrne and Jimmy McCloskey kept up the pressure, adding to the lead. Scoring for East Brunswick were: Tom Gadziala (16 pts), Jimmy McCloskey (5 pts), John Byrne (16 pts), Steve Netti (10 pts), Mike Wagenblast (13 pts), and John McLaughlin (5 pts). East Brunswick could not keep up with Immaculata in the Vaughn Stapleton Tournament. East Brunswick was able to quickly pull away from Woodbridge with John Byrne scoring 18 points and Tom Gadziala scored 16 to set the pace for the Bears. East Brunswick was able to pull away from Edison with John Byrne scoring 30 points. Also scoring for the Bears were: Jimmy McCloskey (4 pts), Tom Gadziala (7 pts), Steve Netti (3 pts), Mike Wagenblast (4 pts), and John McLaughlin (7 pts)

December 16, 2005 - East Brunswick 49, Old Bridge 48



East Brunswick and Old Bridge had a season opener that also was the game of the season, coming down to a basket and a foul shot made by Mike Wagenblast with 1 second left on the clock. The Bears started the game strong, pulling out to an 8-4 lead, but Old Bridge surge forward and was soon ahead 20-17. The game was then tied 22-22 at the half. In the second half both sides really seemed to step it up. Old Bridge was aggressive on defense and got several impressive steals, but Jimmy McCloskey (5 pts), John Byrne (14 pts) and Stephen Netti (6 pts) were not intimidated. The lead kept changing back and forth with neither side able to put the game away. Down 47-46 with 17 seconds left, the Bears got the ball but missed their shot. They immediately fouled Old Bridge. Old Bridge made the first shot, but missed the second shot giving East Brunswick one last chance. Mike Wagenblast (10 pts) drove the lane, made the basket and got fouled doing it. The crowd went wild and when Mike made the foul shot, total bedlam broke loose. What a game!!
