June 1, 2006 - NJSIAA Sectional Semifinals - East Brunswick Defeats Old Bridge 27-25, 24-26, 25-22

East Brunswick really had to work for it against a really determined and talented Old Bridge team. The first game was close, but East Brunswick was ahead by two or three points most of the game, and pulled out to a 21-17 margin when Old Bridge turned up the heat and soon had the game tied at 21-21. The Bears finally won the first game 27-25 on a block by Mike Wagenblast. The second game was very similar to the first, but it ended with a sky high Old Bridge team on top 26-24. Things looked bad for East Brunswick in the third game with East Brunswick behind by 2 or 3 points the whole way, but when the Bears caught up at 16, you could see that the tide had turned, Travis Heilman became unstoppable, scoring 3 of the last 4 kills for the Bears. East Brunswick went on to win the final game 25-22. The fans for both teams were loud and enthusiastic and were treated to some really fine volleyball. For the Bears, Kyle Barry served well and digged shots that didn't seem possible. Travis Heilman had some wicked kills and blocked balls that dropped straight to the ground on the Old Bridge side. Eric Corpus, John McLaughlin, Felix Volyand and Mike Wagenblast showed power at the net. Dmitry Esterov did a great job setting and Alon Gitlin had some amazing digs and great serves. East Brunswick is now 26-3 for the season.
