East Brunswick High School Field Hockey Summaries
November 4, 2005 - NJSIAA North 1 & 2 Semifinals: Bridgewater 2, East Brunswick 1 in OT
East Brunswick was playing against the top seeded team and they came so close to pulling off an upset. The game did not start out well for the Bears. Bridgewater came out ready to attack and 13:55 into the game, on a penalty corner, Alyssa Dragon passed to Alicia Perrine who scored for Bridgewater. East Brunswick, however, had been down like this in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament and they did not get flustered. Michele Epstein, the Bears goalie, made several huge saves to keep East Brunswick in the game. In the second half, East Brunswick roared back. They got three penalty corners in just over 9 minutes. On the third one, Rebecca Gross passed to Kathleen Leone who deflected the ball to Danielle Nicosia who scored her second goal of the season to tie the game with 20:46 left in regulation. East Brunswick kept on the attack and got three more corners in regulation, but they were not able to score. In overtime, the Bears had two more corners, but they did not get any good shots. The Panthers rushed back downfield and got back-to-back corners during which Bridgewater managed to get a clear shot that sailed past Michele Epstein. East Brunswick finished the season 15-4 and are Greater Middlesex Conference Champions. This was a great year for East Brunswick field hockey and coach Todoroff and the entire team should be so proud.November 4, 2005 - NJSIAA Quarter Finals: East Brunswick 2, Morris Knolls 1
Michele Epstein did something rare for a goal-keeper, she was the star of the game. Michele made eight saves, including two game savers in the second half. East Brunswick was under pressure the entire game, with the ball almost constantly on their own side of the field, yet Jessica Todoroff fired a shot between the Morris Knoll's goalie's legs to take a 1-0 lead. This was Jessica's 15 goal for the season - highest in the conference. Christine Buszczak scored the second goal for the Bears. The Golden Eagles quickly responded to bring it to 2-1, but could not get anything else past Epstein. East Brunswick will play top seeded Bridgewater-Raritan on Wednesday in the semifinals.October 29, 2005 Greater Middlesex Conference Championship - East Brunswick 2, Sayreville 1
East Brunswick played like true champions against a very strong Sayreville team. East Brunswick went right on the offense, but Sayreville's goalie Alexa Baldasare made two great saves to prevent the Bears from scoring. Sayreville then rushed down the field and Erica Latz sent a free hit past East Brunswick's defenders and Marta Domanska hit it past Bears goalie Michelle Epstein. It only took East Brunswick a few minutes to tie up the game on a shot by Katie Colchie with an assist by Christine Buszczak. After that, it was a defensive struggle, but midfielders Kathleen Leone and Danielle Nicosia seemed unstoppable in pushing the ball up from defenders Mia Marciante and Judy Lin, up to the forwards Christine Buszczak, Katie Colchie and Jessica Todoroff. Lauren Caruso and Caty Toto were often in the thick of the action and like all the Bears demonstrated great ball handling and teamwork. The game stayed tied until 10 minutes into the second half when East Brunswick's Katie Colchie scored again to give the Bears the winning goal. The Bears continued to aggressively attack the Sayreville goal and narrowly missed scoring on several occasions. In the last 5 minutes, Sayreville went into overdrive and swarmed around the East Brunswick goal. It was somewhat scary for the East Brunswick fans to see that little orange ball bouncing around just a few feet from the East Brunswick goal, but Sarah Gross and the other Bear defenders held strong, and it was with great joy that the East Brunswick team responded to the final buzzer which proclaimed them as the Greater Middlesex Conference Champions!!
