East Brunswick and Old Bridge had a season opener that also was the game of the season, coming down to a basket and a foul shot made by Mike Wagenblast with 1 second left on the clock. The Bears started the game strong, pulling out to an 8-4 lead, but Old Bridge surge forward and was soon ahead 20-17. The game was then tied 22-22 at the half. In the second half both sides really seemed to step it up. Old Bridge was aggressive on defense and got several impressive steals, but Jimmy McCloskey (5 pts), John Byrne (14 pts) and Steve Netti (6 pts) were not intimidated. The lead kept changing back and forth with neither side able to put the game away. Down 47-46 with 17 seconds left, the Bears got the ball but missed their shot. They immediately fouled Old Bridge. Old Bridge made the first shot, but missed the second shot giving East Brunswick one last chance. Mike Wagenblast (10 pts) drove the lane, made the basket and got fouled doing it. The crowd went wild and when Mike made the foul shot, total bedlam broke loose. What a game!!
