East Brunswick Bears Win 2nd Straight State Championship - The Star Ledger article of June 5, 2004 - East Brunswick High School (29-0) Wins Boy's Volleyball State Championship 2004 East Brunswick had to struggle to pull out a victory, but they managed to outlast Fair Lawn for a 25-20, 25-16, 25-27, 18-25, 15-8 victory for their second straight NJSIAA/PSEG championship. This is East Brunswick's fifth state title which ties a state record held by Bridgewater-Raritan for the most in state history.
East Brunswick Bears Have High Hopes - The Home News Tribune article of March 28, 2004 indicated that the Bears coach Greg Rutz expects to finish even better than last year's squad which ended the season 29-2 and won the NJSIAA State Tournament Championship. If they do, it will be a very enjoyable season!
2004 Season - Week by Week Results
April 1, 2004 - East Brunswick defeats Piscataway, 25-15, 25-15, 25-16: East Brunswick treated the home crowd to a solid victory over Piscataway. Tony Yates spiked 10 kills and served 3 aces. Greg Hunter had 34 assists and made 2 kills. Monquell Conway and John Haper also made big contributions to the victory.
April 2, 2004 - East Brunswick defeats J.P. Stevens 25-16, 25-19, 25-19: East Brunswick dominated J.P. Stevens in Edison lead by Tony Yates with 20 kills and 5 digs. Brian Johnson also had 5 kills and 2 blocks. East Brunswick's record is now 2-0.
April 3, 2004 - East Brunswick Wins Viking Invitational Tournament   East Brunswick won the Viking Tournament with a 25-23 victory over Bridgewater-Raritan in the finals. Greg Hunter was awarded Most Valuable Player honors for his superb effort. Tony Yates made numerous kills at critical points in the game. Middle Saif Kawash helped beat Bridgewater with a kill that put East Brunswick up 14-13. Congratulations to the team for a job well done.    Read the full story from the Star Ledger
April 14, 2004 - Number 1 East Brunswick improves to 6-0 - The East Brunswick Boy's Volleyball team defeated West Windsor-Plainsboro North 25-16, 28-26, 25-17 in Plainsboro. Tom Kohler spiked six kills for East Brunswick and Manny Radoussakis served eight points in this victory. Keep up the great work East Brunswick Bears Volleyball!
April 15, 2004 - East Brunswick (7-0) Boys volleyball team beat South Brunswick 25-22, 25-5, 25-15: Dan Sempkowski had nine kills, five digs and three aces to help defeat South Brunswick. Greg Hunter also made significant contributions to help move the East Brunswick Bears to 7-0 - Way to go!
April 16, 2004 - East Brunswick is now 8-0 - The East Brunswick Boy's Volleyball team defeated Bridgewater 25-23, 25-12, 25-18. Greg Hunter had seven kills, Brian Johnson and Tom Kohler combined for 17 kills and Tony Yates made 11 kills. East Brunswick appears to be unstoppable! Read all about it in the Star Ledger.
April 20, 2004 - East Brunswick (9-0) The Bears soundly defeated St Joseph's 25-21, 25-15, 25-14 in front of a home crowd of over 400. East Brunswick got off to a slow start, but with the score tied 21-21 Saif Kawash got a critical kill that helped East Brunswick win. Greg Hunter got 4 kills and two aces, Tony Yates had 15 kills, and Dan Sempkowski made nine kills. Read all about it in the Star Ledger.
April 23, 2004 - East Brunswick (10-0) Senior night was good for the East Brunswick Boy's Volleyball team as they defeated Edison 25-9, 25-18 and 25-9. The seniors on the team shined with Marc Mondry scoring five service points, five digs and seven kills. Dan Temkin had three digs and four kills. April 24, 2004 - Bears Invitational Tournament Top ranked East Brunswick defeated No. 2 Bridgewater-Raritan, 25-16, 25-17, in the final of the Bears Invitational Tournament Read all about it in the Star Ledger.
April 26, 2004 - East Brunswick def. Piscataway, 25-12, 25-15, 25-15 East Brunswick improved to 12-0 with quick defeat of Piscataway. Senior Saif Kawash got 5 kills and two blocks to help lead the bears to victory. Read all about it in the Star Ledger.
April 28, 2004 - East Brunswick def. JP Stevens East Brunswick improved to 13-0 by defeating JP Stevens
May 4, 2004 - East Brunswick defeated Old Bridge, 25-10, 25-13, 25-16 East Brunswick demolished Old Bridge to improve their season record to 14-0. Macej Bykowski and Tony Yates helped lead the team to victory. Read all about it in the Star Ledger.
May 6, 2004 - East Brunswick beat South Brunswick, 25-19, 25-13, 25-22: East Brunswick improved their season record to 15-0 with a victory over South Brunswick. Greg Hunter had 22 assists and 15 kills and Tom Kohler had 12 kills and two blocks leading the Bears to victory. Read all about it in the Star Ledger.
May 11, 2004 - East Brunswick defeated St. Joseph's, 24-26, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 15-7: East Brunswick had their first serious challenge of the season against Middlesex Conference rival St. Joseph's. With star Tony Yates out with an ankle injury, Brad Kern took over as setter and Greg Hunter moved to hitter. While Kern had a great game, the lineup changes seemed to break East Brunswick's rhythm. Down seven points in the fourth game, Greg Hunter was switched back to setter where he was able to orchestrate the play of Dan Sempkowski, Tom Kohler and Brian Johnson who managed to pull out the victory! May 13, 2004 - East Brunswick defeated Edison 25-8, 25-9, 25-19 Dan Temkin had eight kills and three digs and Saif Kawash had six kills and two blocks to help East Brunswick to prevail over Edison. Read all about it in the Star Ledger.
May 14, 2004 - East Brunswick (22-0) defeated Bridgewater-Raritan 25-11, 25-10, 25-19 Greg Hunter led the way with 32 assists, two kills, two aces and a block. Brian Johnson spiked nine kills, Dan Sempkowski had seven kills, Eric Nowicki had 11 service points, seven kills, three blocks and three aces and Tom Kohler had five kills. May 25, 2004 - East Brunswick Wins Second Straight Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament Greg Hunter and Tony Yates powered East Brunswick to an easy win over St. Josephs of Metuchen 25-22, 25-22, 25-16. "Together, Greg and Tony are the best right side of the court in the state," East Brunswick coach Greg Rutz said. In the middle, Tom Kohler had six kills and Brian Johnson had two.
