Before he entered East Brunswick High School, Ross Goldwasser’s experience playing golf consisted of a few rounds at local courses and watching professionals on television.
Then, three months before spring tryouts for the Bears’ golf team, the freshman became serious about the game and began taking lessons. Now entering his senior year, Goldwasser has not only improved, but he surprisingly captured the championship at the Greater Middlesex Conference (GMC) Tournament in May. He did so by winning a three-hole playoff against Monroe Township High School’s Matt Cocorikis and Old Bridge High School’s Chris Tosonotti — the clear favorites coming into the tournament.
Each golfer carded a 76 at the tough Forsgate Country Club in Monroe Township, known for its narrow fairways and greens guarded by large sand traps. However, Goldwasser clinched the title by sinking a 6-foot uphill putt on the third (sixth) hole.
“Going into the playoff, I was pretty nervous, but I felt I had a good chance to win because of how I was playing that day,” he said. “I had played at Forsgate many times, so I was familiar with the course.”
