Having recorded a 35-4 record as a freshman and finishing eighth in the state tournament, followed by a school record 40-2 mark and third place finish as a 152- pounder in his sophomore year, Schleifer is now 37-1 as a junior and is East Brunswick’s best chance to capture a state individual title. As the top seed in the top bracket, Schleifer will wait until the outcome of the match between Cesar Balmaceda (33-1) of Atlantic City High School and Ken Long (28-10) of Holy Cross High School.
Two other Bears will come along for the ride to Atlantic City with Schleifer — Sean Glasgow (132 pounds) and Michael Quintin (220 pounds), who finished first and second, respectively, in their weight classes. Glasgow (32-4) edged previously undefeated Gordon Wolf of Lawrence High School, 7-6, to win the region crown. In two bouts leading up to the finals, the East Brunswick sophomore disposed of Nick Boylan of Hunterdon Central High School, 8-4, and followed that with a 4-2 victory over top seed Nick Wahba of Somerville High School.
