East Brunswick won the boys title in dramatic fashion at the Greater Middlesex Conference Championships on Saturday at the Bennett Center in Toms River.

The boys meet came down the final event, the 4×400 relay. Piscataway led a rapidly improving Edison team, 46-44, and East Brunswick was third with 43.

But East Brunswick won the relay in 3:28.92 with Edison second in 3:31.61 as East Brunswick emerged to win the GMC title with a 53-52 victory over Edison.

“We knew we had to beat Edison by one place and Piscataway by two in order to win the meet,’’ said East Brunswick senior Donald Urschel, who led off the relay with a 50.9, won the 55 dash and was second in the 400. “And since we’ve won the relay three years in a row now, we were confident we could come through again.’’

It is the third title for East Brunswick, which also finished first in 1987 and 2006.

“We’ve won state titles the last few years, but this one has eluded us,’’said East Brunswick senior Alex Malveaux, who won the 55 hurdles in a personal best of  7.49, the second fastest time in the state this season. “So it’s nice to finally get this one.’’

East Brusnwick won the Group 4 title last winter while it shared the Group 4 outdoor championship with Hackensack in the spring of 2010.
